Human Dignity: Why Every Person Deserves Respect

Dignity is an inherent right of every person that can be neither earned nor taken away: its spiritual basis, and how to protect it in daily life.

We sometimes see people through what they have: their position, money, degrees and clothes. So we respect the owner of a luxury car more than the street cleaner, and listen to the manager more than the junior employee. But human dignity is not measured by these yardsticks. It belongs to every person simply because they are human.

The Quran says, "We have certainly honored the children of Adam" (Quran 17:70). The honor was given to all humankind, not to one religion, race or class above another.

First: Dignity is a right, not a privilege

  • It is not earned: no one has to prove they deserve respect; they deserve it from birth.
  • It cannot be taken away: poverty, illness or error do not strip a person of dignity, even when others fail to honor it.
  • It cannot be divided: whoever honors the dignity of their own people and humiliates others has not yet understood what dignity means.

Second: When dignity is trampled

Much of the world's anger comes from people feeling their dignity has been trampled: humiliation at work, contempt because of origin or color, harsh treatment by an institution. A person humiliated for long enough may find their pain turning into anger, and their anger into violence. That is why protecting dignity is a road to peace.

When you respect a person who has nothing to offer you, you are respecting humanity itself.

Third: How to protect people's dignity every day

  1. Call people by their names: the café worker, the guard and the driver have names they like to hear.
  2. Correct in private: correction in front of others wounds; in private it is mercy.
  3. Don't photograph people in need: help without turning their need into a public display.
  4. Respect those who differ: in faith, opinion, language and way of life.
  5. Stand up for the humiliated: a word at the right moment can restore someone's sense of worth.

Conclusion: Dignity is the ground of all peace

Great wars begin when people stop seeing humanity in others, and peace begins when each person sees in the other a human being as worthy as themselves. Let respect for dignity be a daily habit at home, in the street and at work.
