Justice Is the Foundation of Peace: Why No Peace Lasts Without It

The deep link between justice and peace: how injustice breeds violence, and how justice begins at home and at work before it reaches society.

Fighting between two sides may stop, agreements may be signed, and voices may grow quiet. But if one side still feels wronged, that quiet is a short pause, not true peace. Peace that is not built on justice is like a house without foundations: it looks solid until the first strong wind.

The Quran says, "Indeed, God commands justice and excellence in doing good" (Quran 16:90). Justice is a divine command and the soil in which all goodness grows.

First: How injustice breeds violence

  • A sense of oppression: a person whose rights are taken and who finds no one to defend them may look for other ways to reclaim them.
  • Extremists exploit grievances: much extremist rhetoric feeds on real injustices, promising the wronged revenge instead of justice.
  • Inherited anger: injustice that is never addressed passes from generation to generation, and the anger grows with it.

Second: Justice begins in small circles

We often speak of justice as the job of governments and courts alone, but it starts long before that:

  1. At home: parents being fair among their children in love, attention and giving.
  2. At work: giving everyone their due and valuing effort fairly.
  3. In speech: being fair to those we disagree with, mentioning their good as well as their faults.
  4. With ourselves: admitting our own mistakes, just as we ask others to admit theirs.
People are not asked to forget injustice, but to find justice. Only then can they forgive.

Third: Justice and mercy together

Justice alone can be harsh, and mercy alone can let rights be lost. That is why the verse joins "justice and excellence in doing good." A balanced society gives each person their due, then adds the mercy and forgiveness that heal wounds and bring hearts closer.

Conclusion: Be just in your own circle

We may not be able to establish justice across the whole world, but we can be just in our homes, our work and our words. Every small act of justice in our own circle adds a stone to the foundation of a greater peace.
